We're delighted to be hosting Rick from Scarecrow Woodcrafts to the studio, where you'll learn the basics of the Scandinavian Flat Plane style of hand carving in wood using only 1 knife. This minimalistic style of 1 tool proficiency, Mainly employed in caricature and figure carving, originated in Norway and Sweden at the beginning of the 20th century and became popular in the USA and Canada, almost went extinct by the 1960s, then had a quiet renaissance during the 1980s and now blossoming out of a 3rd golden age as one of the most explored crafts during the pandemic times. Hello everybody, my name is Rick, aka Scarecrow Woodcrafts, and I'm a folksinger and Woodcarver based in Edinburgh, UK. I discovered the world of greenwood working first in 2019 (spoon carving, woodturning, etc.), and shortly after I fell in love with the caricature carving world, at the beginning of 2020, and has now become a full-time job, between making and tutoring. I started teaching during a 6-month trip across the USA in 2022, busking and crafting on the road, before returning to Edinburgh. I've experienced how therapeutic and relaxing woodcarving can be, especially in these hectic times we are living in, and I'm eager to pass my skills and experience on and help the next woodcarver feel confident and develop their style of woodcarving. As Harley Refsal once said "If you can peel a potato, you can wood carve" In this class, you will learn about the 4 basic techniques of hand carving, safety, a bit of history of the craft, the basics of painting on wood, what kind of wood and tools are preferred and obviously, you'll walk out with a little carving to bring home with you. Most likely the first of many. Hope to see you, love, Rick (Scarecrow Woodcrafts)
