Come and experience the art of RAKU and discover the joy of glazing and firing pots outdoors.
You'll be firing two pots, using two distinct methods. The first, using metallic glazes and the second applying combustibles such as horsehair and feathers to the hot surface.
RAKU is inspired by an ancient form of Japanese pottery and is always popular so we'll be running a number of sessions over the weekend.
We are running taster sessions each day and your pots must be bought in advance (£45 for both pots ) as kiln space for each session is limited.
Session times are: 10.00am, 12noon, 2pm, or 4pm.
This technique can be used to create stunning crackle glaze, smoked surfaces or metallic finishes. We will provide all the materials and glazes you need to create these finishes, ower you are welcome to bring your own feathers.
Pots, will have been pre-made for you to glaze, decorate and fire on the day. Once you've glazed your pot, we will place them in the gas kiln. Once glowing red hot (around 1000 degrees celsius) we take them out and place into metal containers with combustible materials. This is where the magic happens!
Pots then need to be cooled and cleaned. They may not be ready within the hour slot but you can either wait or come back later to collect.
Please note: In the event we have appalling weather, these taster sessions will not run. We can either refund you or carry this over to the next date.
