We are very excited to introduce a lovely new workshop with Louise Oswald, a Scottish coastal artist who uses natural handmade pigments taken from rocks and pebbles found along the beaches of North East Fife, mixing a piece of the landscape into her paintings.
Workshop Louise will do a quick introduction and demonstrate the process of mineral pigment making. She will then guide you through her 2 part process of painting imaginary rockpools with her handmade mineral watercolours, starting with laying the first loose background before we take a wander down to the shore to look for pigments amongst the rocks. We will then return to the studio to try the process using Louise’s equipment before finishing off our watercolour paintings and mounting them ready to be framed.
Note: In the event of tide times or weather not being appropriate, Louise will bring plenty of pre-sourced rocks for you to choose from. Please wear suitable clothes for being outside and sturdy footwear.
Suitable for Age 12+ and Adults About the Artist: Based at her home studio near St Andrews, she processes the rocks down to a fine pigment that can be stored dry, ready to use with any binder to create her own art materials. Louise primarily uses acrylic to paint her landscapes and larger pieces of work. She also handmakes watercolours using a recipe that includes locally sourced honey to paint her small rockpool illustrations. There’s even a drop of local whisky in her ingredients list.
